Funeral transport from Austria to the rest of Europe

When a family member dies in Austria and is to be buried in their home country, the family faces Austrian authorities, unfamiliar documents and a long journey. We take over all of it. We collect the deceased anywhere in Austria, including Vienna, Graz, Linz, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Klagenfurt, Villach, St. Pölten.

Most transports go by our own hearse, door to door. For long distances, or when the family needs the fastest possible arrival, we arrange air transport from Vienna (VIE).

Documents in Austria

In Austria the death is confirmed by the official post-mortem examination (Totenbeschau), the registry office (Standesamt) issues the death certificate (Sterbeurkunde), and the district authority (Bezirkshauptmannschaft) or city magistrate issues the corpse passport (Leichenpass).

For an international transport the following documents are usually needed. We obtain them on behalf of the family:

  • Civil death certificate, ideally the international multilingual extract
  • Medical certificate confirming the cause of death is not infectious
  • Corpse passport (laissez-passer) for international transport
  • Certificate of embalming or preservation, where required
  • Certificate confirming the zinc-lined coffin has been sealed
  • Copy of the passport or ID card of the deceased

When the deceased is brought to Austria from abroad: On arrival in Austria we coordinate the burial or cremation date with the cemetery administration and the municipality or parish of the place of rest.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do first when someone dies in Austria?

Call us. If the death happened at home, a doctor must first confirm it. In a hospital or care home the staff will do this. We then arrange the collection and explain every next step.

How quickly can the transport start?

We usually collect the deceased within a few hours of the call. The departure depends on the Austrian authorities issuing the documents, which typically takes a few working days.

Can the funeral take place in another country?

Yes. We transport the deceased from Austria to any European country, and handle the documents on both sides.

Do you also transport urns?

Yes. After a cremation we can bring the urn to the family or the place of rest. This needs fewer documents than a coffin transport.
